Resumo

Stability of icosahedral Al72Pd18.5Mn9.5 single quasi-crystals has been investigated under pressure up to 70 GPa by means of an in situ angular-dispersive X-ray powder diffraction method using synchrotron radiation and diamond anvil cell. It is found that the quasi-crystal structure of icosahedral Al72Pd18.5Mn9.5 is stable under pressures ⩽70 GPa. The zero-pressure bulk modulus and its pressure derivative are estimated to be 100 ± 12 GPa and 5.3 ± 0.9, respectively, using the Birch–Murnaghan equation of state. The residual strain in the quasi-crystal sample recovered from 70 GPa is estimated to be about 0.53%.
