Resumo

"Theology of the cross" (as identified by Luther in contrast to "theology of glory") is most authentically itself in our time when it appropriates the key insights of "theology of liberation." Conversely, theology of liberation best fulfils its potential in the service of God's reign when, in faithfulness to Jesus Christ, it seeks to be a theologia cruces. This discussion is fitting, I believe, for a publication in honour of Professor David Demson, who is an unswerving advocate of theology of the cross in its commitment to solus Christus and sola gratia, and at the same time a sympathetic critic of the theologies of liberation.
