Resumo

Additional Mio-Pliocene hominoid remains, recovered in recent years by the author and his associates, are described. These include the remains of Miocene dryopithecines—D. sivalensis and associated species, a Miocene gibbon-like small ape (Pliopithecus krishnaii sp. nov) and a Pliocene giant terrestrial ape Gigantopithecus bilaspurensis. The Mio-Pliocene hominoid fossil material and the Palaeolithic artifacts provide evidence of the presence of Quaternary Man in the Sivaliks. The Sivaliks may now be considered not only as a center of radiation of the earliest primates but also as an area where the first men evolved as bipedal tool-manufacturing and tool-using creatures. Our discoveries have also been considered in the context of the available palaeoecological evidence which has an important bearing on the problem of evolution of man in this area.
