ResumoFurther investigations into the magnetic constituents of red sediments are described, with particular reference to ferrous iron, on which the magnitude of certain magnetic properties of redbeds depends. The investigations reveal the presence of material with substantially paramagnetic behaviour, and it is believed that clay minerals and other ferrous iron-bearing minerals contribute significantly to the magnetic properties of these rocks. The forms in which ferric iron occur are also discussed.
