ResumoBased on the underlying purpose of the Seminar’s general theme, “Problematizing the Republic: 120 years of experience”, this paper discusses the crisis of the Brazilian Empire in the São Pedro Province. This is done by analyzing opinions expressed by two Republicans of Southern Brazil: Joaquim Francisco de Assis Brasil and Francisco Cunha, who worked in the press and the provincial legislature in the ’70s and ’80s of the 19th century. By regionalizing the political process, the article draws attention to a need not always taken into account in the historiography that deals with Republican propaganda and the crisis of the Empire, viz. the need to relativize generalizations made without empirical support. Regionalizing the crisis aims at enabling a “comparative approach” to regional and/or national historical processes. The opinions expressed by these two Republicans make it possible to reflect not only on principles and projects present in the political debate at that time, but also on “the Republican experience during these 120 years” with its obvious limitations.
