ResumoA theoretical expression was derived for the weight average micellar molecular weight (M) and free energy change of micellization (ΔG0) of a multicomponent surfactant mixture. The expressions were tested for commercial samples of some long-chain alkyltrimethylammonium bromides and good agreement was found between theoretical and experimental values of M and ΔG0 for mixtures of alkyltrimethylammonium bromides which contained up to seven quaternaries. The temperature dependence of the critical micelle concentration of these mixtures was determined by conductivity measurements and an estimate of the effect of temperature upon the degree of counterion binding was recorded. These data have been used to calculate thermodynamic parameters of micellization using the mass action and the phase separation models.
