He described three stages: the anemic stage in which hypersplenism was the only finding; the transitional stage characterized by jaundice and disturbed gastrointestinal function; and, finally, the ascitic stage characterized by ascites, together with increasing jaundice and anemia. Banti stated that he had never performed an autopsy on a patient in the earliest stages; but in the transitional stage the portal vein and splenic vein demonstrated sclerotic endophlebitis, and the liver revealed a minimal increase in connective tissue.
