Tge growing popularity of memory either as an academic subject or as a political banner has obscured its character as a social phenomenon. In order to reafirm its original nature three issues are discussed: the retification of memory, its roots in the present and aspects of tis physiology. Attention is called to two often neglected topics: social amnesia and especially the social management of memory. It is suggested that Social Psycholog´s concepts, like of social representations, might help in the stucy of memory as an object of historical knowledge.
