When a replacement had to be found for the present landing system used by the Swedish Air Force, the concept of an autonomous landing system was proposed. This is a flexible solution which employs only the existing sensors in the aircraft. A futher advantage is the considerable saving, since the need for an expensive ground infrastructure is eliminated and there is more room in the aircraft for other equipment. Saab AB, Gripen and Saab Dynamics AB were jointly commissioned to develop the new landing system.
