Resumo

This article discusses Teresa of Avila's references in the Libro de la vida to the concept of honra and its relation to social authority and religious ideology. It examines her particular use of the term autoridad in the sense of 'ostentation', as one of the criteria used in her society for assessing personal honra. It shows how Teresa draws on her personal testimony to expose this kind of honra as a false source of authority and credibility, and as a subtle form of subjection. It also looks at the strategies used by this nun to voice her views and to establish her own moral authority.
