ResumoWedding photography, an important and telling popular culture practice, has been largely ignored in histories of the medium. This article seeks to redress that imbalance by connecting these images to Victor Turner's anthropological theory, feminist analyses of "the gaze", and capitalist visions of "romance". Bezner argues that wedding photographs and albums symbolically demonstrate the enduring centrality of ritual in contemporary America while addressing complex issues such as social change, gender and economics.
