Resumo

The sticking probability α of oxygen molecules in a molecular beam impinging on single-crystal wafers of germanium was determined by a gravimetric technique. The value of α = 0.04 was obtained for surface temperatures between 460 ° and 900 °C and for gas temperatures between 30 ° and 450 °C prior to expansion in generating the molecular beam. Under the conditions of this work, the molecules of oxygen sticking to the surface formed volatile germanium monoxide. It is believed that α represents a steric factor, oxygen molecules being adsorbed only if they lie flat on the surface prior to adsorption.
