Resumo

Although the relationship between nasal obstruction and sleep disturbance is variable, nasal obstruction, either partial or total, can cause obstructive sleep apnea. This article reviews the role of nasal surgery in the treatment of obstructive sleep apnea. Correction of pathologic conditions in the nasal airway may eliminate or decrease the known sequelae of nocturnal upper airway obstruction, that is, alveolar hypoventilation and disturbance in sleep architecture. Representative cases are presented.
