ResumoAbstract Following the success of the 8080, Intel decided that their microcomputer product-development program should follow two paths. The first of these was to upgrade the performance of the 8080 while, at the same time, reducing the cost of incorporating a microcomputer in a system. The result of this path is now history, as it resulted in the introduction of the 8085 (a processor which reduces chip count from 12 to 3 in many systems) and the 8048 family of processors for low-end applications. The second path was longer, since it meant designing and producing a new-generation processor employing the latest advances in semiconductor processing technology and microcomputer architectural design to produce a processor capable of outperforming all previous microprocessors. The result of this work is the 8086.
