Magnesium Alloys: Properties and Applications

Resumo

In the present paper, hydrogen desorption from hydrided binary alloys Mg–xNi (x = 8.5, 11.3, 20 at. %) and from hydrided alloys Mg-8.5 Ni-2.7 X (X = Si, Ge, Sn and In; all in at. %) was investigated. It was observed that the phase composition of hydrided binary Mg–xNi alloys changed within several days after hydridation and that rapid hydrogen desorption occurred after this ageing. The ageing mechanism was clarified and its kinetics was modified by alloying. The best results were achieved by adding In: (i) the ageing process was accelerated, enabling rapid hydrogen charging/discharging cycling (ii) the storage capacity was improved slightly, and (iii) the activation enthalpy of hydrogen desorption was decreased, resulting in easier hydrogen releasing.
