ResumoIncreasing evidence has accumulated indicating that the zona glomerulosa and the zona fasciculata react in a different way to several stimuli. In many kinds of stress, which presumably cause an increased secretion of corticotrophin (ACTH), changes are seen in the lipids of the zona fasciculata although the zona glomerulosa remains virtually unaffected (see Popják, 1944, Deane & Shaw, 1947, Bergner & Deane, 1948, Ducommun & Mach, 1949, Nichols, 1949, Yoffey & Baxter, 1949, Greep & Chester Jones, 1950, Sayers, 1950, Selye, 1950, Eränkö, 1951, Bachmann, 1954). Recent studies have nevertheless shown that, conversely, the size and the lipid content of the zona glomerulosa can be affected by stimuli which need not exert an equal effect on the zona fasciculata.
