Resumo

This work concerns a novel phenomenon in which magnetization of the fluidizing fluid, a ferrofluid, stabilizes the state of uniform fluidization in a bed of nonmagnetic particles. Stability analysis of the two-phase flow using mean field theory to determine magnetic forces acting on components of the bed mixture is employed to predict onset of transition from the stably fluidized to the unstably fluidized state. Computations of predicted transition velocity vs. applied induction exhibit general agreement with data in support of assumptions of the continuum theory. Concepts for process applications are described that utilize the novel features of the beds in contactors for the exchange of mass and heat.
