ResumoIn the presence of small amounts of chloride ion, nickel(II) undergoes a; two-step reduction in acetonitrile. Analysis of the dependency of the half-wave potential of the first step on the logarithm of the CDMBC1 concentration, indicates that this polarographic step involves the reversible reduction of the four nickel—chloride complexes, NiCl42−, NiCl3−, NiCl2 and NiCl+, and that these complexes have nearly identical formation constants in acetonitrile ca. 0.02 M in H2O. The potential and characteristic of the second step suggest that it involves the reduction of hydrated nickel II) ion. With high concentrations of choride ion, only one step, corresponding to the first step in the two-step polarograms obtained at low concentrations of chloride, is obtained. The chemistry of the nickel-chloride system in water is undoubtedly governed by a similar equilibrium situation to that in acetonitrile. In addition, the catalytic nature of the first step has been established.
