We have confirmed this association and identified one of its causes.We examined 28 consecutive female patients who met the diagnostic criteria for anorexia nervosa (3): weight loss of more than 25%, refusal to maintain weight, intense fear of obesity, distorted body image, and absence of organic disease causing weight loss. Twenty-eight women of normal weight were selected as controls. Patients and controls were matched by age (mean ±SD, 22 ±8 compared with 21+4 yrs) and height (157 ±7 compared with 159 ±6 cm).
