Resumo

In February 2012, the European Association of Osseointegration organized its third Consensus Conference in Pfäffikon, Switzerland. This conference was organized along the successful process applied during the previous EAO Consensus Conferences in 2006 and 2009 (Hämmerle & van Steenberghe 2006; Hämmerle & Quirynen 2009). Implant survival and complications Peri-implant tissue destruction Computer-aided implant therapy and soft and hard tissue aspects Reconstructions on implants Within four working groups, four reviews were discussed in each one. The reviews were modified, if decided necessary by the groups and presented to the plenum according to a preset format. Based on the reviews, possible additional information in the literature and the knowledge and experience of the conference participants’ consensus statements were formulated as well as recommendations for future research and implications for clinical practice. They are now available in the form of this supplement to Clinical Oral Implants Research. The EAO as an independent professional organization in implant dentistry was able to fully base this consensus conference on its own resources. No outside funding was utilized neither for conducting the conference nor for publishing the present supplement. All conference participants were asked to declare any possible conflicts of interest. By putting emphasis on these aspects of independence, the EAO is able to provide the implant dentistry community with most valuable up-to-date information on science and clinical practice regarding the above-mentioned topics. In an effort to facilitate the translation of the scientific data into more clinically applicable terms, it is the intention of the EAO board to use the reviews and consensus documents to later publish a clinical practice-oriented version. By this, the EAO intends to serve the clinicians and their patients in a better way in accordance with its philosophy to act as a leading voice in implant dentistry. The organizers express their special thanks to all the participants of the consensus conference for providing valuable input, the rapporteurs for screening the literature and for compiling the manuscripts, the chairpersons and secretaries for guiding the groups and for writing the consensus statements, and to the board of the EAO for the mandate to organize this consensus conference. A special thank you is given to Niklaus P. Lang, editor-in-chief of Clinical Oral Implants Research, and to Wiley-Blackwell for allowing this supplement to be published in this scientifically highly ranked journal.
