It is shown that it is possible to account for the Hα radiation observed in the night sky by radiative transport of Lyman-ß, if the nocturnal hydrogen content of the geocorona is of an optical thickness large enough to account for observed Lyman-α excitation. It is necessary to assume a large variation during the solar cycle in the depth of reversal of the solar Lyman-ß line to account for the Hα intensities reported whether the night-time Lyman-α is excited by single scattering in a geocoma or by multiple scattering in the geocorona. The variation needed is much larger for the geocomal explanation. The variation of Hα with solar elongation angle combined with the intensity data favors the geocoronal hypothesis.
