Resumo

To describe the Community-Based Participatory Research (CBPR) methods used to collect baseline data in 2 rural Mexican communities. CBPR strategies are identified to recruit largely monolingual Spanish speaking, immigrant families for a multi-year obesity prevention project. Approaches include: door-to-door recruitment, meet and greet events, one-on-one/ personal networks, school and community events, and health fairs. Incentives such as food and raffles were offered. Post assessment of participant yield from events and completed study instruments for baseline data collection. Community input and assessment is a valuable tool in increasing participant yield within low income, rural Mexican origin communities.
