Resumo

Natural language processing (NLP) is a field of study focused on understanding the full meaning of spoken or written text, using various computational techniques. To fully realize the potential benefits of electronic medical records and radiology information systems that contain mostly unstructured text, the role of NLP in health care has expanded greatly in the previous decades and has permeated clinical practice. Generally, NLP in clinical applications is used for computerized decision making, evaluating appropriateness of care for quality improvement initiatives, structuring data for clinical research, and data processing to support educational programs. Several NLP applications focus specifically on recognizing clinical findings in radiology reports (eg, fractures, tumors) and identifying normal reports.
