ResumoMediterranean vegetation in France and in U.S.S.R. The coastal areas of the Mediterranean sea in France, of the Black sea (Southern coast of Crimea and province of Novorossiisk) and of the Caspian sea in U.S.S.R. have a Mediterranean xerophytic type of vegetation. The french vegetation can be considered as representative of the Western Mediterranean area and the U.S.S.R. of the Eastern Mediterranean one. In that country, the Mediterranean vegetation is limited to a coastal strip ; it is characterized by a lot of steppic Irano-touranian species, especially along the Caspian sea, by nearly missing evergreen forests, and by the preponderance of plant communities of the Mediterranean belt, including secondary stages as «Chibliak». The most important feature of the soviet area is the succession along the Northern coast of the Black Sea of Mediterranean plant communities and of a broad-leaved evergreen forest, descending from the tertiary vegetation or the Eastern Mediterranean area, before the Mediterranean climate and vegetation appear probably.
