ResumoThe Lung and Its Disorders in the Newborn Infant has been a standard reference for pediatricians and neonatologists since its original edition in 1964. In general, the fourth edition follows the same format as previous ones. Dr Avery covers the physiology and development of the newborn lung, methods of evaluation, the management of specific respiratory disorders in the newborn, resuscitation, and mechanical ventilation. As in the third edition, Dr Barry Fletcher has collaborated on the radiologic aspects of the text. New to this edition, Dr Roberta Williams has contributed to a discussion of echocardiography and aspects of newborn pulmonary patho-physiologic characteristics related to patent ductus arteriosus, the pulmonary vascular bed, and congenital heart disease. To those familiar with previous editions, I need say little of the usefulness of this book.
