ResumoAbstract In 1988, the Swiss Institute for Nuclear Research (SIN) and the Swiss Institute for Reactor Research (EIR) were merged to form the new Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI). It is named after the Swiss physicist Paul Scherrer (1890–1969), a talented experimentalist (X-ray diffraction) and excellent teacher. PSI is located in Villigen-Wurenlingen, Switzerland, midway between Zurich and Basel on both sides of the river Aare (Figure 1). As a national research center for natural and engineering sciences, it is governed by the same authority as the two technical high schools in Zurich and Lausanne.
