ResumoWe are aware of the kinetic Light Emitting Diode torches and the ‘Freeplay’ wind-up radio described by Haldane [1] and in 2005 we had the opportunity to discuss our design for the above device with Trevor Baylis OBE. We agree with Haldane that a clockwork generator is more efficient than a Faraday generator, and considered this in our original design as described previously [2, 3]; however the latter has only one moving part and is therefore a more robust and low-cost solution which is better suited to difficult environments and developing countries. Furthermore the winding mechanism of a clockwork generator must penetrate the outer casing and may therefore allow ingress of water or dust, whereas a Faraday generator can be manufactured as a sealed unit.
