Resumo

The effect of a magnetic field on the high spin to or from low-spin transition in ferrous and ferric compounds is studied by using a model based on the ligand field theory in which the cooperative coupling of iron ions with intramolecular distortions is taken into account. The model predicts that the high spin to or from low-spin transition can be induced by a magnetic field. A cooperative molecular distortion associated with the spin transition is induced by a magnetic field and it is also possible for the direction to be inverted by the field.
