This paper contains information on the works of the Portuguese mathematician F. de B. Garção Stockler (1759-1829) and discusses some aspects connected with the writing of his book Historical Essay on the Origins and Development of Mathematics in Portugal, the first known history of mathematics of a particular country written in Western Europe. The paper is divided into two parts. In the first part, some information is given on Stockler and his published works in the context of Portuguese social, political, and scientific events in the second half of the 18th century and beginning of the 19th century. In the second part, some aspects of the Essay related to its contents, writing, influences, and dating are discussed. Cet article traite du mathématician Portugais F. de B. Garção Stockler (1759-1829). On y donne des informations sur ses écrits, et en particulier on discute certains aspects concernant la rédaction de son livre Essai historique sur l'origine et le developpement des Mathématiques au Portugal, la première histoire nationale des mathématiques connue en Europe Occidentale. L'article est divisé en deux sections. La première contient des informations sur Stockier et ses publications dans le contexte des événements sociaux, politiques, et scientifiques portugais de la deuxième moitié du XVIIIèmesiècle et du commencement du XIXèmesiècle. Dans la deuxième on analyse quelques aspects de l'Essai en vue de son contenu, sa rédaction, ses influences, et sa datation. Este artigo incide sobre a obra do matemático português F. de B. Garção Stockler (1759-1829) e analisa alguns aspectos relativos a escrita do seu livro Ensaio Historico sobre as origens e desenuolvimento das Mathematicas em Portugal, a primeira História da Matemática num so pafs escrita na Europa Ocidental. O artigo está dividido em duas partes. Na primeira são dados elementos sobre Stockler e sobre a sua obra publicada, no contexto da vida social, política e cientffica de Portugal de fins do século XVIII e inícios do século XIX. Na segunda são analisados alguns aspectos do Ensaio relativos ao seu conteúdo, escrita, infiuências e dataçāo.
