ResumoThat the romance can be employed for rhetorical purposes other than reaffirming a culture's values is illustrated by H. Rider Haggard's King Solomon's Mines, a romance that purifies imperialism by dissociating its “appearance” as exploitation from its “reality” as the establishment of justice and the resulting transformation of identity.
