ResumoA continuum damage model for the deformation of brittle materials, based on the mechanics of microcrack nucleation and growth, is extended to include the effect of interaction among neighboring microcracks on the evolution of damage. As a result, the range of validity of the model is extended to include a limited region of homogeneous softening just beyond the point of maximum stress. With the inclusion of interaction effects, a variety of non-linear, time-dependent behavior can be realistically modeled. Examples of the response of rock subjected to a variety of deformation histories such as constant stress rate loading, creep, and uniaxial strain are presented and the results are compared to experimental results where possible.
