The Thirty-eighth Annual Meeting of The Society of Thoracic Surgeons was held at the Greater Fort Lauderdale/Broward County Convention Center in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, on January 28–30, 2002, with an attendance of 4,548 registrants, including spouses and exhibitors. The Scientific Sessions were attended by 1,146 members of all categories and 863 guests, including 236 residents, for a total of 2,023 physician attendees. There were 891 registrants present at the first STS/AATS Tech-Con Meeting. The CCCETS Basic Science Lecture given by Thomas Jackson of Hershey, Pennsylvania, was entitled “Applications of Thin Film Transistors.” Co-Chairs Bruce W. Lytle and Michael J. Mack and the members of the STS/AATS Tech-Con 2002 Committee are to be commended for putting together an excellent program, which attracted a large number of attendees. Continued this year on Tuesday morning were the Meet the Experts Sessions. These were run concurrently with the popular Technical Sessions—How I Do It. On Wednesday morning a series of Clinical Workshops on selected topics was held. The J. Maxwell Chamberlain Memorial Paper, “Outcomes After Esophagogastrectomy: A Ten Year Prospective Cohort,” was presented by Stephen H. Bailey and was co-authored by David A. Bull, David H. Harpole, Jeffrey J. Rentz, Leigh A. Neumayer, Theodore N. Pappas, and Shukri F. Khuri. The Poster Sessions were made using Digital Interactive Poster Presentation (DIPP) technology. There were three poster presentation sessions. Each poster was briefly presented by the author in a formal setting and then discussed by the attendees. These sessions and the new DIPP presentations were extremely popular and were judged by the participants and attendees as being a valuable component of the Annual Meeting program. On Tuesday evening, the Annual Movie Night featured 10 outstanding films. There was active discussion of these films and the procedures which they covered. The success of these sessions and the scientific program was due chiefly to the substantial effort of the Program Committee under the vigorous leadership of W. Randolph Chitwood, Jr, Constantine Mavroudis, and Douglas E. Wood. Mark B. Orringer’s Presidential Address was entitled “Unity and Participation: Embracing Counterintuitive Survival Skills.” It will appear in an upcoming issue of The Annals of Thoracic Surgery. The Thomas B. Ferguson Lecture given by Shukri F. Khuri of Boston, Massachusetts, was entitled “Quality, Advocacy, Healthcare Policy and the Surgeon.” It too will appear in an upcoming issue of The Annals. The Joseph Utley Memorial Lecture, “Current Ethical Issues in Thoracic Surgery,” was given by Robert M. Sade. There were six successful forums presented at the Annual Meeting. On Saturday evening, the Medico-Legal Symposium was offered. On Sunday evening, Issues in Thoracic Surgery Transplantation (co-sponsored by STS/ASTS), the 3rd International Symposium, and the Practice Management for Cardiothoracic Surgeons were offered. On Monday morning and afternoon and Tuesday afternoon, an English Second Language Authors Workshop was presented. On Tuesday morning, the Government Relations Symposium was held. All were well attended and judged a success by attendees. Stuart L. Boe chaired the Local Arrangements Committee. Mrs. Stuart L. Boe (Cynthia) chaired the Spouses’ Hospitality Committee. The Annual Reception was held at the IGFA Fishing Hall of Fame Museum. Doctor Boe did an excellent job of planning for the various activities in connection with the meeting. Mrs. Harold C. Urschel, Jr (Betsey), organized the Eighteenth Spouses Postgraduate Program. A good turnout of spouses attended this Postgraduate course. Kenneth Maddox from Houston, Texas, addressed the topic, “The 21st Century Begins: September 11, 2001.” At the Annual Business Meeting, the following officers were elected: William A. Baumgartner, President; Robert A. Guyton, First Vice President; Peter C. Pairolero, Second Vice President; Gordon F. Murray, Secretary; Douglas J. Mathisen, Treasurer; L. Henry Edmunds, Jr, Editor; and W. Gerald Rainer, Historian. Torkel H. J. Åberg was elected International Director. Constantine Mavroudis and Douglas E. Wood were elected Directors-at-Large. A complete list of officers, standing committees, councils, workforce members, and society representatives follows this report. The Society extends its appreciation to retiring officers and committee members for their dedicated service. One hundred forty-eight new members were elected. The total membership now stands at 4,400. The Smith, Bucklin staff is to be commended for their hard work and diligence, which produced an outstanding meeting. The Thirty-ninth Annual Meeting will be held January 31–February 2, 2003, in San Diego, California. William A. Baumgartner, Baltimore, MD Robert A. Guyton, Atlanta, GA Peter C.
