Figure 1 Sinclair Irwin was passionate about rugby and played for Ireland, winning five caps as a back row forward. He volunteered for the Royal Army Medical Corps in October 1939 but was captured at the fall of France in June 1940 when he stayed behind with the wounded. In 1950 he was appointed to the Royal Victoria Hospital as a general surgeon, where he developed an interest in vascular work. He was involved with the planning of the redevelopment of the hospital. He retired in 1978. He was president of the Ulster branch of the Irish Rugby Football Union and later of the union itself. He leaves a wife, Betty; and five children.
