ResumoThe present study, a Habilitationsschrift presented at the Georg-August-Universität at Göttingen, begins with a useful assessment of the literature on Albrecht Altdorfer and the so-called Danube School. The obvious aim is to focus on the artist's works in all media and place them within their iconographic and cultural contexts. The result is a very substantial study divided into two extensive parts, respectively on religious late medieval imagery (Von himmlischer Liebe) and on profane love (Von irdischer Liebe); the first section mainly exploits prayer books and devotional texts, exegetic and catechistic treatises, while the second uses the context of novels and novellas, as well as didactic and satiric poems to unravel the symbolism and the wider resonance of Altdorfer's works.
