Resumo

1. A technique is described enabling direct measurement of combined oxygen in 5-μl samples of whole blood. 2. Oxygen equilibrium data from Neanthes virens were determined at 9, 15 and 22°C and revealed a high oxygen-combining capacity of 6·8 vol. % at 15°C. 3. The absence of a Bohr effect was demonstrated at pH 6·68 and 7·33. 4. Hill's coefficient, n, was found to be l·3-1·4 over the range of temperatures studied but was pH dependent. These values indicated weak haem-haem interactions. 5. The role of haemoglobin as a transport pigment is discussed in relation to the oxygen-deficient sediments in which the worms live.
