Resumo

Airglow data are analyzed to obtain a set of excitation, energy transfer and quenching reactions and their rate coefficients. To reduce the number of reactions a restriction is imposed on the reactions proceeding via planar collisional complexes with all reactants and products in Σ or S states. The airglow altitude profiles measured can be explained by the excitation of five metastable O2 states and O(1S) via a common precursor having the ratio of the rate coefficient of quenching by O to that by O2, equal to 5. Only O2(5πg) satisfies all constraints imposed on this precursor.
