Resumo

The mass and energy balances describing free-radical solution polymerizations in a tubular reactor are numerically solved. The kinetic expressions developed are general and include the branching mechanisms of transfer to polymer and terminal-double-bond polymerizations. The attendant equations of motion are solved for both the axial and radial velocity profiles. This resulting simulator is used to show the effect of design parameters and operating conditions on the performance of the reactor in terms of the quality and quantity of polymer produced. The parametric sensitivity shown by tubular polymerization reactors makes a detailed simulator invaluable for their proper operation and optimization.
