ResumoAbstract The coherent superposition state of an atomic gas system excited by Doppler-free, two-photon absorption is analysed. It is shown that this zero-momentum coherent state does not dephase by thermal motion of the atoms, but decays only by homogeneous relaxation mechanisms. This state can be observed by a Doppler-free, two-photon emission process using a delayed interrogation pulse.
