Resumo

Techniques for colonization of Topomyia yanbarensis and notes on the biology of a laboratory colony are presented. Larvae were reared on either a prey diet (Aedes aegypti larvae) or a nonprey diet (Tetramin). Duration of aquatic stages was 25–45 days after oviposition at 28 °C with a 15-h photophase. A photophase of 12 h at 24 °C induced 4th-instar diapause, which was terminated by a 15-h photophase. Males mated with females resting on bamboo internodes (3 cm diam), and females oviposited in small holes (3–4 mm diam) bored in bamboos. Females laid 1 egg per oviposition site; several eggs were laid daily, with a total of more than 100 eggs during an oviposition period of ca. 2 months.
