Potential global stratotype sections and points in China for defining Cambrian stages and series

Three stratigraphic sections in the Cambrian of China that contain complete successions across important biohorizons having chronostratigraphic value, and that may be useful for developing Cambrian stage or series boundaries, are reviewed. The Wuliu section (Guizhou, South China), contains the FAD of Oryctocephalus indicus at 58.2 m above the base of the Kaili Formation. The Wangcun North section (Hunan, South China), contains the FADs of Ptychagnostus (or Acidusus) atavus, Ptychagnostus punctuosus, and Lejopyge laevigata at 1.2 m, 56.7 m, and 111.3 m, respectively, above the base of the Huaqiao Formation. The Xiaoyangqiao section (Jilin, Northeast China), contains the FAD of Cordylodus proavus in the Fengshan Formation at 10.89 m above the zero point of the section. A fourth potential stratotype section, the Wangcun South section (Hunan, South China), which contains the P. atavus, P. punctuosus, and L. laevigata zones, is discussed briefly. Trois coupes chinoises bien documentées sont révisées. La coupe de Wuliu (Guizhou, Chine du Sud) contient un niveau situé à 58.2 m au-dessus de la base de la Formation de Kaili, lequel coïncide avec la première apparition de Oryctocephalus indicus. La coupe de Wangcun Nord (Hunan, Chine du Sud) contient trois niveaux situés à 1.2 m, 56.7 m et 111.3 m au-dessus de la base de la Formation de Huaqiao, lesquels correspondent respectivement aux premières apparitions de Ptychagnostus (ou Acidusus) atavus, Ptychagnostus punctuosus, et Lejopyge laevigata. La coupe de Xiaoyangqiao (Jilin, NE de la Chine) contient un niveau à la base du lit 7 (prélèvement 7A1) de la Formation Fengshan (10.89 m au-dessus du point 0 de la coupe). Le niveau coïncide avec la première apparition de Cordylodus proavus. Tous ces niveaux se situent dans des séquences de roches continues et dont les conditions d'affleurement sont excellentes. Les coupes sont potentiellement intéressantes pour la définition des GSSP et donc pour celle des étages et séries du Cambrien à l'échelle mondiale. Une quatrième coupe à GSSP potentiel (Wangcun Sud, Hunan, Chine du Sud) contient les zones du P. atavus, P. punctuosus, et L. laevigata ; elle est décrite brièvement ici.
