ResumoTwo sensitive techniques for pneumococcal capsular antibody determination, radioimmunoassay (RIA) and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) are available. The RIA-technique, however, is expensive and requires specific equipment and is, therefore, only available in a few centres. Evidence is produced to indicate that the ELISA technique is useful for the serological diagnosis of pneumococcal infection. It is inexpensive and does not require special equipment. Furthermore, antibody determination of the different immunological classes can be performed easily. To date, no detailed comparison between ELISA and RIA is published.
