Abstract Star counts in M33 are compared with high-resolution radio observations of neutral hydrogen gas. These observations suggest that (1) the gas layer is thinner near the center of M33 than it is in the outer parts; (2) the rate of star formation depends more critically on surface gas density in the outer region of M33 than it does in the inner parts of this object; and (3) the relation between gas density and number density of bright stars is similar to the relation between gas density and number density of H ii regions.
