ResumoThe British humourists, especially Swift and Sterne are traditionally seen as writers who influenced Machado de Assis’ works. However it was the critic Eugenio Gomes who showed with precision the sublety and excellent taste of Machado obtained through this influence. With our contemporary approaches, it becomes interesting to question the idea of influence and examine in the light of intertextuality this contact of humour between the works of Machado and those of these two great figures of Literature in the English Language.
