The effects of the side-dam materials for the edge containment of a twin-roll caster and the position of the side-dam on the edge quality of the as-cast strips are investigated in this paper. On the basis of the results of the experimental investigation, better side-dam materials have been selected for the direct casting of Zn10Al alloy strips and steel strips, which are available economically. The results show that the edge quality of the as-cast strips is very satisfactory when the selected side-dam materials are used during twin-roll casting.
