Resumo

SINCE Charcot and Vulpian, in 1860, first recognized the condition of multiple sclerosis as a disease sui generis , studies on the etiology, prognosis and treatment of this clinical entity have been carried out predominantly in the field of medicine. In recent years, however, scientific interest has shifted to include the psychologic implications of multiple sclerosis, since a purely physiologic and mechanistic approach has thus far been relatively unproductive. There has been evidence that this shift in emphasis has opened more promising avenues of research, which warrant thorough investigation. 1 Accordingly, the group of patients with multiple sclerosis at the Veterans Administration Hospital at Fort Thomas have been made the subjects of an investigation in which psychologic evaluation comprises an integral part. The initial stage of this investigation is concerned with complete psychologic measurements.
