I welcome the interesting and additional remarks of Silverman [this issue], which provide more insight into the complexity of Megenberg's Das Buch der Natur. These comments may be helpful for Anglophone readers unfamiliar with this material. In my Eos, article, I pointed out that Megenberg was the first person to describe the aurora in great detail, and that there is in general a difference in his description between meteors and auroras. In literature from before the sixteenth century, auroras very often were referred to as “meteoros.”
