Resumo

Abstract An improved method for measuring the enthalpy of melting of salt hydrates in large nonstirred samples is presented. Results for calcium chloride hexahydrate are around 200 J/g. The decline of this value with consecutive cycles of cooling and heating is due to stratification followed by degradation to the tetrahydrate. The application to heat storage is discussed. A procedure for an accelerated stability test is proposed.
