ResumoAbstract Photosensitized methylation of mercuric acetate in aqueous acetic acid solutions in the presence of mercuric sulfide has been studied. Mercuric sulfide solubilizes rapidly in the dark coupled with the reduction of inorganic mercury, and the resulting sulfur atoms photo-polymerize under irradiation with a blacklight-lamp to give a milky white suspension, photo-sulfur, which acts as an efficient photosensitizer for the production of methylmercury.
