ResumoThe non-reducing disaccharide trehalose (α-D-glucopyranosyl-α-D-glucopyranoside) was identified in Sulfolobus solfataricus by 13C NMR spectroscopy. The screening of a range of other archaebacteria, using a rapid isolation and purification procedure for trehalose, indicated that this disaccharide is present in a number of halophilic archaebacteria, thermophilic and sulphur-dependent archaebacteria and methanogenic archaebacteria.
