ResumoThe kinetics of garnet formation by solid state reactions were reinvestigated by sintering the mixtures of Y2O3 and Fe2O3 powders at several temperatures from 800 to 1400°C for 3–12 h in air. Among the reaction products of mixtures sintered at 800–1300°C YFeO3 was always found by X-ray diffraction methods. The temperature region of orthoferrite stability depends on the grain size of the starting materials. According to SEM and electron probe microanalysis investigations, the reaction is controlled by the diffusion of iron into the Y2O3 grains.
